The Quartet is back in action! For a while, at least-- the Pulse Prophets will again fill up my calendar from June-August. I'll try to find a few dates for the Quartet, though. We've got one more date this month at On The Rise, in Richmond on Friday, May 16.

As always, after rehearsing and performing with the Quartet, I am inspired to do it more. And to compose more. Last night's gig at the Black Door was fun! Brian Boyes played trumpet, and played it beautifully. We hadn't rehearsed with him, but I had emailed him charts and recordings.

I've been putting some really focused work into my playing over the last few months, really honing in on the phrasing and development of my solos. I really felt good about it last night, even though I was feeling under-the-weather and I haven't practiced consistently since I went to Hawaii.

I'm in Hawaii with the Pulse Prophets. We just finished a string of gigs on the island of Oahu. We've got a few days off before we head to Maui for some more shows. Now there is swimming, hiking, and kayaking to be done.

Our gear rental situation got screwy from miscommunication, and I found myself without an instrument to play when we arrived. Renting synths on short notice was prohibitively expensive. After much searching and calling friends of friends and family, we located and borrowed a Yamaha DGX-620. It's got an "X" in the model number, so it's got to be good, right? No, the DGX-620 is a cheezy toy. Yamaha does make some decent instruments-- I play a P80-- but much of their stuff is crap. The first gig was pretty rough, trying to make that thing sound good. But I was ultimately able to adjust my playing to accomodate the thing, which basically means simplifying my parts to the bare essentials without adding the "sparkle" that I usually bring to the band's sound. And it turns out the sparkle isn't really necessary.
